Understanding Your Heating System

It’s easy to believe that all heating systems are the same – at the end of the day, when all is said and done, they keep our house warm! But much like the warm characters of Sheffield, where some of us are Blades and others are Owls – these heating systems also differ slightly depending on where we live.
In layman’s terms, there’s no one size fits all when it comes to heating systems; although in regards to household boilers it’s likely you’re dealing with a Conventional, System, or a Combi Boiler.

Choosing a Boiler

So, what’s right for you?

Combi Boiler

A Combi boiler is a single unit that can provide both central heating, as well as instant hot water, although the difference is that a Combi boiler uses no hot water tank. Combi-boilers are generally more compact units, and can be much more energy efficient than their contemporaries.

System Boiler
A system boiler deals central heating, but can provide hot water by storing it in a hot water cylinder tank. They handle high hot water demand; so are great for busy households, and they also tend to heat the home quickly and efficiently.

Heat-Only (Conventional) Boiler
As the name suggests, a heat-only boiler specifically deals with burning fuel to providing hot water and central heating to a household. They’re often compatible with old heating systems, and work well even on low pressure.

Boiler Protection

Being from the City of Steel, us Sheffielders know a thing or two about the importance of protection – and protecting your boiler is no different!

First and foremost, it’s essential that your boiler system is always properly cleaned throughout to protect against bacteria, and to extend the lifespan of your system.

To help ensure this, boilers should always be fitted with magnetic filters; Without a magnetic filter you risk collecting sludge and residue particles. The installation of a magnetic filter assures that these blockages are avoided, and that the system runs smoothly.

If you’re from outside our ends, you might even need a hard-water filter installed to protect against hard-water minerals, and avoid the risk of bacterial growth.

Renewable Heating

In effort to save the Planet, the Polar Bears, and the Arctic Monkeys – it’s important that we begin to consider alternatives to burning fossil fuels.

As we move further into the future it’s essential that we try and move toward renewable energy sources to power our heating systems.

It’s likely that everyone will eventually make the transition to Solar-Powered heating systems to warm their homes. Whilst there are many upsides to this; Mainly producing a lower carbon footprint and reducing bills in the long term; At the moment there are still some negatives such as the initial cost of solar installation, and of course that solar power efficiency is completely dependant on the weather conditions.

For these reasons, we still believe that boiler heating systems are simply more practical and cost-effective currently. Although, as these systems become more affordable and practical for the homeowner, it is an area we will be excited to transition into at some point in the near future.
